Artsy-Craftsy Hobbies

I'm not a craftsperson per se, although I've been doing crafts since I was a little girl. My mom being a haute couture tailor really inspired me to start sewing. I've always watched her making complex dresses for her clients and tried making little dresses for my own dolls. Of course, living in the Soviet Union meant that there were no Barbies (I've got my first Barbie when I was thirteen and I actually did get to play with it, thank you very much), or any type of ready-made doll dresses that one could buy in a store or even on the black market, which meant that being able to sew for my dolls became really handy. My ugly plastic dolls (the Soviet substitute for a Barbie) wore the best dressed on the block. Don't feel too bad for me though, because I did have a few nice German dolls. One of them could even walk and another one could speak, although she spoke in German and apart from the word "mutter" I had to idea what she was saying.

I also embroidered a lot as a child, but (thankfully) that one passed when I became an adult. I think that I would still do it, if I could freeze time. Otherwise it's just too time-consuming. Although, I must admit that embroidering is a very nerve-calming activity. I wish more people embroidered in their spare time, because I think it'll lead to a lot less road rage.

Nowadays, I have random spurs of desire to do crafts, that usually occur around holidays or friends' birthdays. Although once in a while I do randomly produce crafts when I get inspired by useless junk around the house that I can picture as a part of something greater. It's amazing what can be done with seemingly useless junk. Of course, if you'd like to follow in my footsteps you'll have to open your eyes to all the possibilities. In my life CD's often end up as futuristic Barbie hats, (as it turns out the diameter of the opening in a CD fits perfectly on a Barbie's head), and pieces of broken jewelry find a new life as belt buckles for my dolls. As they say, 'one man's trash is another man's treasure'.
