"The Dance"

(oil painting on canvas, 16X20, 2006)

"Dancing is a perpendicular expression of a horizontal desire."
George Bernard Shaw

"Three things can't be hidden: coughing, poverty, and love."
Yiddish proverb

"Women marry men hoping they will change. Men marry women hoping they will not. So each is inevitably disappointed."
Albert Einstein

"But to see her was to love her, Love but her, and love forever."
Robert Burns

Since my childhood I’ve been drawn to dancing as the subject for my artwork. I like the passion of dancing. I love watching tango competitions or better yet Argentinean tango competitions. Of course, any type of dancing could emit passion. I can only imagine the passion experienced by some medieval maiden from being able to touch her beloved’s hand while madly hopping to the estampie.

One of my favorite ‘dance’ moments of all time is a scene from ‘Dirty Dancing’ (which happens to be one of my favorite movies). It’s the scene where Baby and Johnny Castle dance just before they make love for the first time. Remember their dance together? It is so sensual… I can’t picture anything else that lets two people express their desire for each other so strongly, with the rare exception of Ping-Pong, of course.
