"When one buys some of my artwork I hope it is because they will wish to learn from it and not because they think it will match their drapes."
Christian Cardell Corbet
"Skill without imagination is craftsmanship and gives us many useful objects such as wickerwork picnic baskets. Imagination without skill gives us modern art."
Tom Stoppard
"The history of modern art is also the history of the progressive loss of art's audience. Art has increasingly become the concern of the artist and the bafflement of the public."
Paul Gauguin
I recognize that people have every right to enjoy whatever they choose, however, I'm still dissapointed by the overwhelming indifference in our society towards fine arts. I believe that art is one of the most powerful phenomenon in the human history and that it has the power to make people more humane as well as happier.
It’s hard for me to understand some individuals who prefer a pair of six-hundred-dollar jeans that they would wear for one season over a piece of art that can bring them happiness and a sense of harmony for life. I feel that a good piece of art is like a ‘decoration’ for the soul as opposed to material things that only serve as temporary decorations for one’s body or mind.
It’s quite evident that many people don’t understand modern art and in some cases are even offended or repulsed by it. To be perfectly honest, I don’t get a lot of contemporary art either. I feel that many contemporary artists place emphasis on ideas behind their artwork, while completely ignoring aesthetics. Unfortunately, since a vast number of their ideas are total garbage the modern art-gallery-and-museum goers are left staring at the latter.
However, there is still plenty of exciting art and interesting artists out there (hopefully you will think that the work of yours truly falls into that category). I dare to dream that by exposing potential art lovers to the artists’ understanding of the world as well as their artwork and making art web sites more entertaining people will acquire appreciation for modern art and become more interested in it.
P.S. If you're a potential art lover and I don’t manage to inspire you to like fine art I hope that I’ll at least inspire you to take interest in something other than materialistic things in life, because I don’t want the most exiting memory of your life to be about buying a Prada purse or Jeffery-West shoes.
