"Floating Lips"

(oil painting on cardboard, 16X20, 1999)

"You can't depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus."
Mark Twain

"There are three classes of people: those who see. Those who see when they are shown. Those who do not see."
Leonardo da Vinci

The Floating Lips self-portrait started off as a seascape print that I bought at a Goodwill store for $3. I knew I had to buy it, because in the picture there was a little boat floating on the horizon that clearly looked like my lips pressed together when I pout.

I've never been a big fan of sea or landscapes. I'm not against all landscapes per se. I just don't like the ugly ones and unfortunately they're the ones invading people's homes and offices much faster than the good ones are. I wouldn't buy one of those creations advertised on TV for $49.99 if I were tortured by the Spanish inquisition. However, I do buy these 'masterpieces' for a few bucks each, after people give them to the Salvation army. I love painting over this so-called 'art'. So if you see a painting, that once adorned your living room with my face on it, don't take it personally.
