"Self-portrait as Jesus Christ"

(acrylic painting on cardboard, 8X10, 1999)

"I fear one day I'll meet God, he'll sneeze and I won't know what to say."
Ronnie Shakes

"God has no religion"
Mahatma Gandhi

"I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish He didn't trust me so much."
Mother Teresa

"Going to church does not make you a Christian any more than going to the garage makes you a car."
Lawrence J. Peter

I painted self-portrait as Jesus Christ back in college. Just as many other young people I was rebellious and thought that I was über-cool and contraversial by portraying myself as a divine being revered by many.

I have since then realized that if I wanted to be truly controversial I should've painted a self-portrait as Prophet Mohammed, but as we all know it's much safer to attack Christianity as opposed to Islam. Hinduism is yet another religion that an artist can safely use in his artwork without being afraid that some Hindu radicals would ever protest it. After all one never hears about any Hindus protesting farmer John slaughtering cows somewhere in Iowa?
