There is absolutely nothing that I find more entertaining than observing people. My favorite game is trying to figure out someone's personality and profession by looking at his facial expressions, his mannerism and even outfit. I do the same when I work on my character illustrations. I paint a person and come up with a little story about him/her.
I acquired this habit when I was a little girl. As a child I spend a lot of time painting and I entertained myself by coming up with stories about every character I would paint. If I painted a scene depicting several people I also came up with how they might be related or know each other. I believe that imagining all this gives my characters more character!
